CII: Pet care sector needs science, scale and stronger systems

The CII India Petcare Summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders and animal welfare stakeholders to discuss the future of India’s companion animal economy. The key message was clear: the sector is growing fast, but sustainable expansion will depend on science-led nutrition, stronger veterinary infrastructure, responsible pet ownership and policy support.

Dr Naveena B. Maheswarappa, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, said India’s pet care industry is emerging as an important economic segment with strong potential in investment, manufacturing and job creation. He highlighted the need for evidence-based nutrition, sustainable sourcing, proper labelling standards and greater R&D to reduce import dependence and promote indigenous product development under Make in India.

He also called for strengthening veterinary education, setting minimum standards for veterinary institutions and para-professional training, and expanding referral hospitals, emergency care, diagnostics and specialist services. He said technology, including digital platforms and remote sensing, can improve access and efficiency, while pet insurance, public-private partnerships and One Health awareness can support long-term ecosystem development.

Ms Maneka Sanjay Gandhi said the sector must be seen in connection with public health, urban planning, veterinary education and animal welfare.

Dr Arun Atrey noted that companion animal care is entering a new phase, with growth across healthcare, nutrition, diagnostics, insurance, retail, technology and specialised services.

Petpitch India views this as a strong B2B story, where future growth will be driven by regulated product development, veterinary capability, supply chain localisation and tech-enabled services. For brands, manufacturers and service providers, the opportunity lies in building a more organised, science-backed and business-ready pet care ecosystem.
